UPDATE FROM NEPAL ON COVID-19
Students: One of our staff members in Dang, Deepa, visited various students at their homes last week. They are unable to go to school and learn their courses. An alternatives way of teaching is not possible as there is no proper access to the internet in rural areas, and some students even don’t have television. Most of the parents are uneducated, so they cannot guide or help with their studies. However, getting books, notebooks, ball pen made them happy, and they are doing some study. Recently, we allocated books and other needed stationery items to them. When she visited, many were busy making catapults, some are fishing, and others were playing local child games. The older ones were doing house chores, learning new weaving skills, working in the fields, practicing their handwriting, drawing, reading books, etc.
Medical treatment: Sick people are not getting access to health services due to inadequate health facilities in the local areas. And all the major government hospitals are turned into COVID hospitals. So, nobody is getting proper health services right now. If you have a fever or the symptoms which match with coronavirus, then nobody will do the checkup. Then, they have to get a PCR test, which is kind of impossible to get in rural areas. Deepa met 2 sick people; Abina’s mother and Susmita's mother. They have shared their problems. They both have same health problem ( paralysis). I felt so sad to hear about Abina’s family because her father was paralyzed many years ago. Her mother used to run livelihood by doing labor work, but now her mother is paralyzed herself, and she did not get proper treatment due to lockdown.
Susmita’s family is too weak financially that they could not afford for her mother’s treatment. Her mother was paralyzed 4 months ago. Sadly Susmita’s father died many years ago. The photo in the left hand side is of Abina and that of right side is of Sushmita.
Labour work: Local people’s income decreased because they cannot do regular labor work. Sadly, most of them are staying at home. Only a few are doing labor; among them, our three students also go for employment near their house. Among them, one study in grade 8, whose name is Sachita, another is Anita, who is SEE student and like this another is Banita who is going to study in grade 10. They are standing from left to right, respectively, in the photo. They shared their problems and they need to work to run their livelihood. Anita added that she had done excellent preparation for her SEE exam, but she felt like her hard work is being wasted. Like this Banita also shared her feeling that she could not attend her new grade. Even though they work for the family, they are responsible students.
Being Productive in Lockdown Time: In this lockdown, local people don’t have enough income for the family, so they are in financial pressure. Before some families used to buy a cooking gas cylinder bit now, they could not afford it. That’s why local people go to the forest for firewood. In the same way, some women are making local plates made of leaves. They want it to sell in the quarantine. Besides these, they make plates for daily use. Some students are interested in other activities like handicrafts. They use to spend their leisure time making things which are in daily use. Some students even sell their beautiful handicrafts. Like this, some students are learning from their friends and mother. The girl in the photo is Amrita. Her mother also makes various types of handicrafts. Amrita is inspired from her mother. She likes to decorate her room, making many creations. Furthermore, she likes singing. Like Amrita, I have found many students interested in creative works. Students are studying along with their work.
