UPDATE FROM NEPAL ON COVID-19

Co-Executive Director, Kate Phelps, talked to the staff at our in-country partner organization, Creating Possibilities (CP), this week and received updates on the current state of the country.

Nepal is on lockdown at the moment and you can receive fines or be detained for being out for any reason that is considered non-essential. In the capital of Kathmandu there is an undercurrent of anxiety that is prompting migrant workers to return back to their homes in rural villages. CP Director, Dinesh Sapkota, reported that 1,000 people per day are leaving the capital to go home where they feel safer. People are leaving any way they can: riding on a bus or even walking for days if tickets are sold out or they just cannot afford it. The lockdown was extended this week to May 7th, but our staff and participants there hope the low incidences of Covid-19 cases in Nepal will prompt the government to start easing restrictions. We are hoping to see the state of the country shift positively in the coming weeks as other countries begin to re-open slowly, with everyone’s safety in mind.

Our programs in Dang are currently paused. The Mothers’ Groups are not meeting. This is not ideal as the connection and support from these groups is huge for the women of the community, along with offering the financial means to carry out business operations that feed many mouths. Schools are also shut down, but, like others across the world, our students are trying to continue their studies from home. Our staff are trying to support them in this time. While following regular social distancing protocols, they have tried to check up on students to see how homework is going and to help where they can. There are are some pictures above from isolation studies in Dang.

WEBINARS

As we watched our spring fundraising events get cancelled one by one, we thought long and hard about what our best move might be to continue our mission of empowering girls through education.

We thought back to an idea that we’ve had for a long time, to move learning online so that we can showcase women who have a skill they’d like to share and to help connect isolated women for the chance to learn skills from the comfort of their own home.

We are thus pleased to introduce Gather Online, an online series of workshops for free or low-cost registrations. You can sign up for any workshop and you will receive the recording link to keep forever. After the workshop has passed, you can “Donate what you can” and download the recording.

ONLINE GATHERINGS (7).png

Honouring Menarche Virtual Circle, may 6th, 12-1 p.m. pst

Menarche. It’s one of the rites of passages for a woman’s life. Generally, if we’re lucky as young girls we know to expect its arrival, we’ll know physically what’s coming. But would you have liked it to be more honoured than that?

Sophie Maliphant from “The Country that Shook” will walk us through a collection of beautiful rituals that allows us to honour the girl that we were when our menstruation came.

To give you an idea of what this might look like:

  • Welcome tea - choose your favourite tea to honour yourself

  • Stepping into our adolescent selves

  • The practice of deep rest

  • Introduction

  • Breathing practice

  • Invitation to share

  • Write to her

REGISTER HERE FOR $3.

Proceeds are split between Sophie’s Nepali charity “The Country that Shook” and Her International

We would love for those that register to attend live if possible.
