UPDATE FROM NEPAL

Written by: Creating Possibilities Nepal staff

It hasn’t been the easiest time for our staff and students in Nepal, but they made the best of lockdown. They are starting to attend school again which is wonderful. Mothers’ groups are also starting to meet again with Covid-19 precautions in place.

STUDENTS

Watch the following videos for a short update from two of our students, Sabita and Sumitra.

The Covid-19 pandemic affected every field in Nepal, like education, occupation, labor work, field work, business, etc. The effects by Covid-19 in the field of education are given below.

  • The school has been closed the past six months.

  • During this lockdown, students’ minds have been diverted from the study.

  • The government ultimately provided education to students through online, radio, television platforms. Unfortunately, our rural areas could not access these due to limited connectivity.

  • During the lockdown, we conducted alternative classes in communities by hiring teachers directly. Ninety-seven students had participated those classes. The students of the communities were very happy getting these classes. In our region, we become a role model for such classes. As we have started to run classes in community for students, then other school also started to take short time classes in school.

Schools recently reopened in September, but still there is a fear of Covid-19 so students are attending every other day to allow for small class sizes. Students are happy being back in schools.

Summary of topics covered at Mothers’ Group meetings over the past three months:

1. ”Discussion about Business and benefit of government agricultural office”

In this difficult time, many mothers and their husband are not getting jobs. With no money, it is hard to get the needed things in the home. Many want to farm but they didn't have enough money to buy the fertilizer, seeds and tools. We informed and guided them about local government facilities and support available for agriculture. This support helped them to start farming and doing husbandry.

2. “Information about Health facilities from the health post”

The government health posts have resumed their regular services and they also give many medicines free of cost. Not only that they do pregnancy test and other labs test too. So we counseled the women to visit for regular checkups so that they can get rid of many communicable diseases and other disease.

3. Sustainable Menstrual Health

We are sharing the information about feminine health and of the option of a menstrual cup. Many are asking about this option. They felt it easier and comfortable than sanitary pads.

thank you stober foundation

We got some very good news this summer. We are thrilled to announce that the Stober Foundation donated $51,500 to Her International.

The money will fund our long-awaited pilot program for our adolescent girls leadership course in Canada, along with a variety of student scholarships in Nepal.

We are in discussion with two youth-focused groups, in Fort St. James and Kelowna, to run pilot sessions of the Canadian version of She Creates course starting in the new year. We can’t wait to share more with you!
